PONTE VEDRA BEACH - Alex Cejka ran off three straight birdies Friday morning and kept right on going, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to build a two-shot lead over Ian Poulter at The Players Championship.
Cejka played before only a few dozen fans for most of his round at TPC Sawgrass and gave them a treat with six birdies on his first 11 holes to build a big lead, then playing 1 over the rest of the way.
Poulter played in stifling heat later in the day, as the wind began to swirl. He managed a 68 and will play in the final group today.
Tiger Woods was on the cut line until a pitch out of deep rough - one of several cases where his short game saved him - for a birdie on the par-5 ninth that sent him to a 69.
Woods begins today's round seven shots behind Cejka.
