BOCA RATON - Plant City's dream flag football season ended in defeat as star quarterback Quet Shaw threw four interceptions in a 13-7 loss to Tallahassee Leon in the state semifinals Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at 7 and less than a minute remaining, Leon faced a fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line but the play was broken up by Raider defender Shaniqua Abdullah, giving Plant City a chance to drive for the winning score.
On the Raiders' first play after the change of possession, Shaw's pass attempt was tipped and intercepted by Sharonta Williams, who returned it to the 1-yard line.
Two plays later, Lions quarterback Anna Devlieger found Renea Bryant in the back of the end zone for the game-winning score.
"In many cases, you can only go as far as your star player takes you and Quet wasn't quite herself today," Raiders coach Randy Harris said.
"But you have to give them all the credit, they made the plays they had to make."
The Raiders (15-1) let numerous scoring opportunities slip away. On their first drive of the game, they marched down the field, but Shaw was intercepted on second and goal from the 10.
With five minutes left in the first half, Plant City drove inside the 5-yard line, but Shaw was intercepted again, this time on fourth and goal.
The Lions capitalized on the turnover when Zhane Huggins scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, giving Leon a 7-0 lead two minutes before halftime.
The Raiders tied the game at 7 when Shaw connected with Cathleen Evans for a 44-yard TD late in the third quarter.
Plant City took possession with 10 minutes left and drove deep into Lions territory again, but with the Raiders facing third and goal, Shaw threw her third interception.
