DADE CITY - New houses built in Pasco County after this summer could be required to have stronger foundations – a strategy county officials hope will reduce insurance rates for people in sinkhole-prone sections of the county.
County commissioners this morning took the first step toward tightening the local version of state building codes to require builders to add more steel rebar to the corners of house slabs, making the homes better able to withstand having the ground subside beneath them.
Commissioners set a public hearing for the proposed building code amendment for June 9.
It's unclear exactly how – or if – the additional strength in home foundations will reduce insurance rates.
"Homes built under this standard would be the test case," assistant county attorney Elizabeth Blair said.
