Police: Attempted abduction story not true

CLEARWATER - An 8-year-old girl who claimed a man tried to lure her into his van Sunday apparently made the story up so as not to get into trouble for having ventured too far on her bicycle, police said today.
The supposed abduction took place as the girl's family was having a get-together at the Palmetto Park Apartments, 1001 N. Martin Luther King Junior Ave.
The girl claimed the man told her that her mother wanted him to take her home, police said. She told police that when she refused to go with the man he began to call her derogatory names and chased her until she was in sight of relatives.
