In their home countries, children such as 19-month-old Mich Acon of Uganda would face an uncertain future because of serious health problems.
In Tampa, Mich has a fighting chance of survival.
He underwent surgery Tuesday at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital for a congenital heart defect.
The boy is recovering in the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit and is listed in fair condition.
Mich is one of 30 children from Uganda who have been brought to the United States by Gift of Life International for treatment.
