WESLEY CHAPEL - Mitchell boys basketball coach Larry Holden has made the 2008-09 season his last with the Mustangs.

Holden, who led the Mustangs to a 27-51 record in three seasons, was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005 after earning 376 wins in 24 seasons.

"I've really enjoyed my years of coaching," Holden said Monday. "Even though we were not as successful down here as what I would have liked to have been, I think what you have to do is judge a program from where you start to where you leave. That's how you look at success. If I stuck around a couple more years, yeah, I think we would be in position ... we had a nice jump from last year to this year, and our young kids are very talented and there's going to be a lot of success there, but you reach a point when you know when you're ready to be done, and I'm ready.

"I still want to follow it. I'll still do some things to help whoever gets the coaching position. I'll still come back and watch the kids along the way."

Holden, who will turn 61 later this month, began his head-coaching career at Ohio's Lake High, where he coached four seasons. He then moved on to Beavercreek High, putting in 20 years.

During Holden's tenure at Beavercreek, the team won 46 games in a row and won 69 of 71.
