What a wonderful idea that Mike Trentalange had about raising the liability rates for teachers and school board members so that they would be held more accountable for the protection and "lives and safety"of our school children (Letters, May 13). After all, $100,000 is not enough deterrent to keep these people responsible.
I wonder if these teachers and school board members realized that they were taking on such an awesome responsibility when they signed up to become a part of trying to educate our school children? It's not just a matter of simply educating the children any more. Does all accountability for student behavior rest with the teachers and the school? Student responsibility has to figure in this equation somewhere. Is there any liability there?
Could it be that the teaching profession is on the same course as the medical profession? Could the personal liability concerns for the teachers and the school board members prevent good people from entering this noble profession? Let's hope not.
