TAMPA - A teen driving a stolen vehicle was shot this afternoon by a Tampa police officer who was trying to pull him over, authorities say.
Derrick Sheffield, 16, of 325 W. Woodlawn Ave., Tampa, was shot once in the shoulder, police say. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed tonight in good condition, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.
Police give this account of what happened about 5:50 p.m. near 50th Street and Melburne Boulevard:
Officers spotted Sheffield driving a stolen Chrysler Concord and attempted to pull him over. Sheffield kept driving, leading the officers on a pursuit that lasted about a minute.
Sheffield was going west on 26th Avenue and tried to turn south on 46th Street when he lost control of the car and crashed into a chain-link fence. Police drove their patrol car directly behind the Chrysler and as they got out, Sheffield put the car in reverse and hit the accelerator.
The Chrysler slammed into the patrol car, causing it to spin. Officer Dustin Kennedy fired his weapon, hitting Sheffield once in the shoulder.
Kennedy has been placed on paid administrative leave, standard procedure in a police-involved shooting. Tampa police internal affairs detectives and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting.
