For five decades, the Tampa Tribune has honored the top 3 percent of seniors graduating from public and private schools based on their grade-point averages. Those who submit an essay vie for annual college scholarships honoring former Tribune publisher R.F. "Red" Pittman.
The winners are based mainly on writing skill, leadership and community service. This year's panel of seven judges were: retired Hillsborough school administrators Mary E. Bryant, Joyce Haines, John R. Owens, Myrna Robinson and Vince Thompson; Paul Dosal, executive director of Engaging Latino Communities for Education; and James E. Tokley Sr., Tampa's poet laureate. So, without further ado, we present this year's three winners of $1,000 scholarships.
