TAMPA - A tight economy and a steeply discounted admission drew huge crowds Sunday to the Lowry Park Zoo, which was charging $5 to get in for the day.
Zoo officials expected 10,000 people - enough to overwhelm the zoo's parking area. The zoo set up remote parking at the Tampa Greyhound Track on Nebraska Avenue and ran a free shuttle for overflow crowds.
People were lined up well ahead of the zoo's scheduled 9:30 a.m. opening.
Admission was $5 for anyone 3 and older. Younger children got in free.
The normal admission is $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for those 60 and older and $14.95 for children 3 to 11.
The zoo runs its $5 admission special four times a year. The first was in January, and next is July 19. The last admission discount day will be in September.
