TAMPA - An elephant seized from a Balm-based circus in November died Friday.
Officials with The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee said Ned, a 21-year-old Asian male elephant, died peacefully with caregivers.
Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture confiscated Ned from trainer Lance Ramos on Nov. 8 after determining the elephant was drastically underweight.
Sanctuary officials said Ned weighed 7,500 pounds when he arrived and needed to add about a ton to be considered healthy.
Kate Elliott, the sanctuary's managing director, said staff members were unable to stabilize Ned's condition in the past six months. She said he continued to lose weight, couldn't absorb nutrients and had bouts of abdominal cramping.
Ramos has several run-ins with federal authorities over the care of his animals.
