TAMPA - Hillsborough High senior baseball player Jay Laurienzo on Wednesday was named the 2009 recipient of the Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award.
Laurienzo was presented with the award in the county commission boardroom of the Frederick B. Karl County Center in downtown. Presenting him with the award was Wade Boggs, the Major League Baseball Hall of Famer for whom the award is named.
Established in 2005, the Wade Boggs Award is given annually to a Hillsborough County high school baseball player or team in recognition of outstanding athletic and scholastic achievement.
Laurienzo, an outfielder, led the Terriers this season in nearly every offensive category, batting .483 with seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, 23 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He also has been an outstanding student, ranking third in Hillsborough's senior class with a 5.5 GPA, and has been heavily involved with community service, logging more than 125 hours during work with Metropolitan Ministries and coaching youth baseball at area baseball camps. He has signed a baseball scholarship with Division I Florida Gulf Coast.
"For me to get this, to me it's amazing. It's almost kind of satisfying for how hard I've worked and knowing how hard I've worked, and now it's finally paying off," said Laurienzo, who underwent Tommy John surgery in the offseason but was able to join Hillsborough after missing just five games this season. "And hopefully it will keep paying off in the future."
Armwood's Robert Benincasa and Plant's Mychal Givens were recognized as honorable mention award recipients.
