LAND O' LAKES - Two physical education teachers who began offering a private before- and after-school child care program at San Antonio Elementary this school year will get the opportunity to continue the service in 2009-10.
The Pasco County School Board decided in a 4-1 vote Tuesday to drop a plan to put a district-sponsored PLACE program at the school. Had PLACE gone in, the teachers' program would have been forced out.
PLACE, which stands for Pasco Learning and Activity Centers of Enrichment, operates at 39 elementary schools.
Some San Antonio Elementary parents had rallied around the teachers and lobbied the school board to let them continue their program, called Coaches' Training Camp.
Board member Joanne Hurley, who represented the board in a meeting with the P.E. teachers and district staff, made the motion not to expand PLACE to San Antonio.
Board Chairman Frank Parker cast the lone vote against Hurley's motion. Parker said the teachers charge $50 a week for their service while PLACE will charge $40 in 2009-10.
Not only does the camp cost $10 more, but Parker said he thinks the two teachers will have to raise their fee to bring in the money they need to operate.
