WASHINGTON - Federal regulators are fining a Florida-based regional airline $1.3 million for overworking its pilots and dispatchers.

The Federal Aviation Administration said today that Gulfstream International Airlines of Fort Lauderdale violated regulations on how many hours pilots and dispatchers can work and for improperly maintaining equipment.

FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said an investigation last summer found instances in which flight crews were not provided a minimum of eight hours rest in a 24-hour period and in which flight crews flew more than 34 hours in a seven-day period.

The fine comes on the heels of safety hearings last week into a regional airliner that crashed near Buffalo, N.Y., in February, killing 50 people.

The airline's Web site says it offers business travelers and vacationers 157 scheduled non-stop flights daily, including service in Tampa.
