TAMPA - Lowry Park Zoo staff welcomed a baby manatee into the world this week, although the delivery complicates the staff's goal of nursing the baby's injured mother back to health.
The pregnant manatee was brought in this month with a serious injury from a boat. Now that she has given birth, she needs time to establish a bond with the calf, forcing zoo staff to refrain from treating her injury.
The male calf, born Monday, weighs 76 pounds, appears healthy and is nursing routinely, the zoo reported.
Doctors will continue to monitor the pair and will resume treating the mother's injury as soon as possible.
