PORT ST. LUCIE - Back-to-back doubles by Casey Smit and Matt Brandy tied the score and Eddy Williams scored the winning run on a throwing error as Alonso defeated Miami Columbus 4-3 to win the Class 6A state baseball championship.
Alonso (30-3) becomes the first Hillsborough County school to win a state baseball title since Tampa Catholic in 2001 and the first county public school to being home the trophy since Plant in 1988.
Jose Fernandez got the win for the Ravens but needed seventh-inning help from Jordan Huchro. After giving up three runs in the first inning, Fernandez retired 18 in a row before giving up a single and hitting a batter with two outs in the seventh. Huchro entered and got the final Columbus batter to ground out to first.
