ZEPHYRHILLS - Zephyrhills closed its first spring football season under a new coach in 20 seasons Friday night. Under the direction of former Leto coach Jerrell Cogmon, the Orange beat the Black, 14-7.
The first quarter was mostly a struggle for field position until Jacob Guy, the younger brother of starting quarterback Tyler Guy, completed a pass to Josh Geiger for a 50-yard score.
Linebacker Anthony Viernes delivered hard hits all night in an attempt to ensure a close matchup. In addition to Viernes' hits, rising senior Chris Reaves has materialized into a weapon for the Bulldogs.
Following the game, Cogmon said he expects Tyler Guy and Viernes, as well as other veteran players, to take or continue their leadership roles with the team.
