Colbert leaves Chamberlain's football team

Less than two months after accepting the job, John Colbert has stepped down as Chamberlain High's football coach, Chamberlain principal Jeff Boldt confirmed Tuesday.

"I guess we'll start from scratch and find the best person for the job," Boldt said. "It's a tough thing to go through again but it might be for the best. I think a lot of people thought it was a done deal who we would hire for the job and because of that, I think a lot of quality people may not have applied."

Colbert was telephoned but could not be reached for comment.

Colbert took over the football program in April after longtime coach Billy Turner retired. At the time, many believed Turner's son, former Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Turner, would take over the job. Instead, it went to Colbert, a former head coach of Tampa Bay Tech who led the Titans to a district title and an 8-2 record in 2001.

Colbert inherited a Chamberlain team that was 11-2 in 2008. The Chiefs won the district title before losing in a Class 5A region final. This spring, however, several key players transferred to other schools in the county. At last Friday's spring jamboree, the Chiefs lost 17-0 to Hillsborough.

Colbert resigned from TBT in 2001 after four years as coach for health reasons. Since coaching at Tech, Colbert worked on the sidelines at Apopka High and most recently at West Orange High in Winter Garden, where he also served as assistant athletic director.
