I was amazed to see the Hillsborough County School Board members acted like adults in keeping Good Friday on the school calendar and not making it a school holiday.
This is a good sign that the board members are looking after the welfare of the students as well as the taxpayers of Hillsborough County. The board realizes that this is an issue of separation of church and state. If members allow a "Christian"' holiday, then they open the door to religious holidays of other faiths as well.
I applaud their courage to do what is right rather then open the county up to costly legal challenges in the courts. It has been my experience that Good Friday is not necessarily a day when our churches are filled with school-age kids. Most are out and about with their friends. There is also the alternative of private religious schools for those seeking more of a religious nature to their education.
Hillsborough County schools are public schools, and this keeps them that way.
