A pickup driver is dead after trying to pass another truck on State Road 60 in Mulberry today, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
A Ford F-150 tried to pass a Toyota pickup on S.R. 60's outside lane near Bonnie Mine Road about 3 p.m. The Ford then drifted back into the inside lane and struck the passenger side of the Toyota truck, driven by Joseph Vazeos, 35, of 980 Shady Lane, Bartow.
Upon impact, the Ford truck went to the right, rolling over after the grassy shoulder of the roadway. The driver was ejected from the truck and died at the scene. Deputies say he was not wearing his seat belt.
The driver's name has not been released because next of kin has not been notified.
The eastbound lanes of S.R .60 at Bonnie Mine Road were closed for nearly four hours after the incident. The sheriff's office is still investigating the cause of the crash but notes it was raining at the time.
