Less than two months after accepting the job, John Colbert stepped down as Chamberlain High's football coach, Principal Jeff Boldt confirmed Tuesday.
Boldt said he believed Colbert had become frustrated with events that had taken place since taking over the program, including the loss of several key players to transfers. Colbert did not return a call seeking comment.
"I guess we'll start from scratch and find the best person for the job," Boldt said. "It's a tough thing to go through again but it might be for the best. I think a lot of people thought it was a done deal who we would hire for the job and because of that, a lot of quality people may not have applied."
Colbert took over the team in April after longtime coach Billy Turner retired. At the time, many believed Turner's son, former Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Turner, would land the job. Instead, it went to Colbert, a former head coach of Tampa Bay Tech who led the Titans to a district title and an 8-2 record in 2001.
Colbert inherited a team that was 11-2 in 2008. The Chiefs won a district title before losing in a Class 5A region final. This spring, however, players such as linebacker/running back James Wilder and defensive lineman Eric Hammond transferred to other schools. At Friday's spring jamboree, the Chiefs lost 17-0 to Hillsborough.
