DADE CITY - City commissioners are hoping the federal stimulus package might help stem turnover at the city's police department.
The city is applying for a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to buy new police cars.
Police Chief Ray Velboom said the department has been losing officers to other agencies that allow take-home vehicles. With the purchase of three new cruisers, the department would be able to offer each sworn officer a take-home vehicle.
"I've had two officers resign recently, and in their exit interviews they said money was one issue," Velboom said. "The other issue was take-home cars."
Pasco County is slated to receive $867,177 in stimulus funds from the Justice Department. The county keeps 51 percent of the money and plans to distribute the rest among the county's four municipalities.
