TAMPA - A pallet thief who used his pickup to ram open a gate was nabbed by police this week when the battering-ram truck got stuck in the mud during the heist, authorities said.
The burglary occurred Tuesday night at OPTA Minerals Inc., 3401 E. Third Ave., according to Tampa police.
Thomas Conroy, 44, 9717 N. Willow Ave., plowed his 1994 Ford F150 into the front gate and stole about 30 pallets, police said. When he returned for more pallets, his truck got stuck.
He left the truck there and called police from a nearby motel to report the truck stolen, police said. On Wednesday morning, police found the truck and asked Conroy to come to the District 3 office for an interview.
There, he admitted to the break-in, police said, and he was charged with burglary and theft.
He remained in the Orient Road Jail this morning. Bail was set at $7,750.
