TAMPA - That call the Bucs made recently to Plaxico Burress probably won't be the last one they make to the troubled wideout.
Though he didn't get into specifics, Bucs coach Raheem Morris sounded Thursday like someone who would jump at the chance to add Burress to his roster should Burress free himself of his legal issues.
"He's a great player," Morris said of the former Giants and Steelers standout. "Anytime you have an opportunity to get a great player, you'd love to see a great player come to Tampa."
Unfortunately for Burress, his next stop might be prison. He's due in court June 15 to answer to a weapons charge that carries a minimum sentence of 31/2 years in prison.
The charges stem from an incident in November inside a Manhattan nightclub in which Burress shot himself in the thigh with an unlicensed gun. He later was released by the Giants and also might face a league suspension.
Burress' attorneys are believed to be negotiating a plea agreement in the case, but reports say Burress has so far balked at any deal that results in him serving even a couple months of prison time.
"He has to deal with his issue with the league and we'll see how that plays out and their timing and everything of that nature," Morris said. "But we really don't know what that situation is right now. We're really talking about ghosts, to be honest with you, because we're talking about a suspended guy."
The Bucs made an exploratory call to Burress last week, according to NFL.com, and are believed to be among three teams to express interest in the receiver.
