Football: Mitchell offense outshines defense

TRINITY - If Wednesday's controlled scrimmage is any indicator of the fall, Mitchell will have a dangerous offense.

For their spring intrasquad game the Mustangs ran a controlled scrimmage with their top two offensive units alternating between its top two defensive units.

As May comes to close the offense is ahead of the defense. The Mustangs offense racked up 466 total yards, the vast majority coming from the first string offense.

"That's the goal: to put points on the board," said Mitchell coach Brian Wachtel.

Highlighting the evening was Mustangs quarterback Cody Vandeboe. He connected on all but two of his 10 passes and one of those incompletions was dropped. Vandeboe, who was as accurate on the run or flushed out of the pocket as he was throwing from a stationary position, racked up 118 passing yards and three touchdowns. His touchdowns came when he hooked up with three different receivers on throws of 14, 15 and 31 yards.

"Cody has come a long way since we started 15 or 16 days ago," Wachtel said. "As a result he's becoming a really good quarterback. If he continues and is dedicated he's going to do really well."

Running back Ricky Trinidad was also impressive. He carried seven times for 128 yards with his longest run of the night coming on his last attempt, a 75-yard touchdown run.

"Ricky has done a really good job," said Wachtel. This has been a great spring for him. We're running some new things than he has been used to in the past and I think he is now feeling comfortable."
