To ease truck traffic, officials look to the water

TAMPA - Federal officials are pursuing a 21st century marine transportation system, including "maritime highway" projects intended to lessen truck traffic with the use of more water cargo routes, participants said Wednesday at the 11th annual Harbor Safety Committee Conference.

About 225 maritime officials, including dozens of U.S. Coast Guard personnel, are attending the three-day conference at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel.

One of the early examples of the projects is a tug-barge service between Port Manatee and Brownsville, Texas, that was launched late last year.

One reason for the emphasis on ports is that traffic is expected to increase from 10,500 trucks a day on the interstate highway system to nearly 23,000 trucks a day by 2035.
