TAMPA - Sheriff's detectives are investigating whether a 19-year-old woman did anything illegal when she posted a fake ad on Craigslist.com offering her baby for sale.
The ad was taken down from the online site that features the equivalent of classified ads.
The single mother came to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office district office about noon today, said department spokesman J.D. Callaway. She was concerned she may have done something illegal or improper, he said.
The woman does have a child but it is younger than the one offered in the fake ad. A photograph in the ad of the child supposedly for sale was a random photograph she pulled off the Internet.
The department's child's protective division is looking into the woman's household to see if the child is being properly cared for. The woman was not arrested, though the sheriff's office has opened a criminal investigation.
The child is still with its mother.
