WINTER PARK, - A murder defendant in central Florida wants tax dollars to pay for the removal of a bullet from his groin he says it will help in his defense.
Authorities said Craig Carwise fired 15 shots in 2006 outside an apartment complex in Winter Park, killing one person. He was charged with first-degree murder.
But Carwise claims the other person shot him first. His lawyer says removing the bullet could prove it didn't come from the same gun that shot the murder victim. Prosecutors disagree.
The Justice Administration Commission, which approves defense costs for indigent defendants, reports that the state pay for the surgery. County officials also say it's not their responsibility.
Now it's up to a judge to decide what to do.
