TAMPA - Westchester (N.Y.) Community College 6-11 center Jarrid Famous remains committed to the University of South Florida, his father, Jerome Famous, said Sunday night.
On Tuesday, Westchester assistant Mickey Carey said Jarrid Famous wanted out of his letter of intent, prompting USF coach Stan Heath to fly to New York Sunday to meet with Famous and his father. Westchester coach Tyrone Mushatt also attended the meeting, Carey did not.
"I don't know why Mickey said it," Jerome Famous said. "I'm not trying to argue with him. Jarrid's coming to South Florida. Mickey made a statement that will probably cost him his job."
Jerome said his son would not comment Sunday. Jarrid has not talked to the media during this whole process.
Heath, Mushatt and Carey did not return telephone calls or text messages Sunday night.
Earlier Sunday, though, Carey still claimed in a text message that Famous wanted out of his letter-of-intent to USF. "Jarrid had said he already [told] Stan he wanted out. So the meeting wasn't all that important to him," Carey wrote.
Famous averaged 25.2 points and 13.7 rebounds last season. He has two years of eligibility remaining. His father said his son will report to USF on June 25.
"I want it to be clear he's coming there," Jerome Famous said. "I want him to get his degree and go to the pros. He'll work hard there."
