MIAMI BEACH - State Sen. Dan Gelber won't be running for U.S. Senate.
Gelber told a crowd of 1,100 Democratic Party supporters that he is leaving the Senate race in order to help unify the party.
Gelber entered the race in January, but he said Saturday that Democrats need to stop their history of forming "a circular firing squad" by hurting their candidates in primaries.
That leaves U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek as the top Democratic candidate for the seat Republican Mel Martinez is leaving after one term. Republicans in the race are Gov. Charlie Crist and former House Speaker Marco Rubio.
