CLEARWATER - Police arrested a 48-year-old man they say exchanged gunshots Saturday night with an officer on the Pinellas Trail.
No one was hit.
Officers were called to Eldridge Street about 9:45 p.m. with a report of shots fired. An officer found the suspected gunman on the trail who ran away. During the chase, he turned and fired at the officer who fired back, the Clearwater Police Department said.
Several shots were fired.
Additional officers called to the scene arrested Wilson Geathers, Jr., of Spruce Street in Clearwater, police said.
He was charged with second-degree attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, a felony in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine and on a warrant for child support, police said.
He later told detectives he started shooting in the air after an argument with his girlfriend, police said.
The police department did not identify the officer.
