TIGERS' RECORD IMPROVES
The Jesuit Tigers picked up an extra win this week - and got rid of a loss in the process.
Lakeland Kathleen, which defeated Jesuit 27-14 in the season opener, was forced to forfeit its first six wins this season for using an ineligible player, according to a report in The Lakeland Ledger. Kathleen self-reported the violation to the FHSAA. The school's guidance staff inadvertently "misinterpreted and/or misapplied" the district's grade forgiveness policy in determining the academic eligibility for an unnamed player, according to the report.
Kathleen, which is 8-0 on the field, was eliminated from playoff contention because three of the forfeit losses were in district play.
Jesuit, which defeated Middleton on Friday, is now 7-1 on the season. The Tigers can earn a playoff berth - the first for the program since 2006 - with a win this week against St. Pete Catholic.
CALLING ALL KNIGHTS
It has been a big year for Robinson's team, which secured the program's first district title since 1977 with a victory Thursday over Steinbrenner. Knights coach Mike DePue is hoping the buzz surrounding the South Tampa program will lead to a big reunion at the team's final regular-season home game.
DePue is asking all former Robinson football players to attend Friday's matchup against Strawberry Crest at Jack Peters Field. DePue plans to recognize all of the players on the field during halftime of the game, which will also serve as Robinson's Senior Night.
DePue is hoping the game will serve as a major membership drive for the Robinson Football Alumni Association, which was established eight years ago.
