TAMPA - It took nearly half the season, but we finally have weather that feels like fall and should last more than a day or so.
A cool front that showed up overnight brought dry air and lower temperatures. With forecasts for afternoons in the low 80s, the days of high 80s and soupy humidity are gone for a spell.
And while the brisk start to the morning gets anyone's attention, the cool front only dragged temperatures down to about the level they're supposed to be for early November, at least for the Tampa Bay area.
In southern Florida, the front has stalled and temperatures are still expected to be slightly above normal.
For Hernando County and north, days should be in the 70s and mornings in the 50s, a bit below normal.
Long range forecasts have the high pressure that's keeping the humidity at bay hanging around through the week and don't show a return to the more summer-like temperatures that dominated the first five weeks or so of fall for at least the next seven days.
There's also a major change in humidity levels between north and south. The National Weather Service says there's a 20 degree difference in dew points – a measure of moisture in the air – between counties north of Tampa and ones to the south.
We begin to feel more comfortable when dew points fall below 70 degrees. The dew point has been at that level or above most of October.
Dew points overnight were in the low 50s around Hillsborough County, high 40s in Hernando and in the middle 60s in Punta Gorda.
