TAMPA - A 26-year-old man on a bicycle was struck and killed by a Hillsborough County deputy's cruiser Sunday night.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Michael Hannaford was on routine patrol heading west on U.S. 92 near Mobile Villa Drive when Jonathan Loschen rode a bicycle into Hannaford's path about 10 p.m., deputies said.
Loschen, of 305 Hillside Drive in Seffner, was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died, the sheriff's office said.
The incident was investigated by the sheriff's office's crime scene and traffic homicide units, and Hannaford, who has worked for the department for eight years, will return to normal duties, the department said.
Preliminary tests at the hospital showed Loschen had a blood alcohol level of 0.27. That is more than three times the level state law presumes intoxication for the operator of the motor vehicle or bicycle.
