PHILADELPHIA - Fans looking to sleep off the pain of the Phillies' series-turning Game 4 loss awoke Monday to an advertisement on the back page of the Philadelphia Inquirer that many of them termed, well, offensive. That's because the large ad for Macy's lauded the Phillies for winning their second straight title.
In large type were these words:
CONGRATULATIONS PHILLIES!
BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS
And then there was a big photo of what the Phillies' championship T-shirt would look like ($25 for men's and misses, $16-18 for kids) had they actually won the Series, which was not the case.
Honest mistake, yes. The wrong ad hit the presses, something that happens once every blue moon at every newspaper. This was not exactly the second coming of Dewey Beats Truman.
Representatives for Macy's referred all requests for a comment Monday to the Inquirer, which posted a message from its vice president of national advertising to readers on its Web site Monday afternoon.
CABRERA OUT: Injured OF Melky Cabrera was replaced by backup IF Ramiro Pena on the New York Yankees' World Series roster.
Cabrera left the Yankees' 7-4 win in Game 4 on Sunday night in the middle of the sixth inning with a slightly strained left hamstring. Cabrera took an awkward swing and appeared to hurt his leg while running out a grounder.
Brett Gardner, who took over for Cabrera on Sunday night, got his first career postseason start in center field Monday night.
Pena, picked over pinch-runner Freddy Guzman and No. 3 C Francisco Cervelli, has not appeared in a game since the regular-season finale on Oct. 4.
PHOTO FINISH: Joba Chamberlain had one heck of a photo finish.
The Yankees reliever was thrilled to celebrate New York's Game 4 win - he just didn't realize he was the one credited with the victory.
"It actually didn't hit me until my sister showed me the picture," Chamberlain said. "I didn't even think about it. She took a picture, and she goes, 'You won in the College World Series and now you won in the World Series.'"
MOUND ISSUES: All those meetings on the mound called by C Jorge Posada and the Yankees are giving Major League Baseball pause, too.
Posada and pals visited P CC Sabathia eight times - in a single inning - on Sunday night, grinding Game 4 of the World Series to a standstill. Agitated Phillies fans booed each trip.
MLB vice president of umpiring Mike Port said frequent mound meetings by all teams likely would be discussed by baseball officials this offseason.
One trip to the mound is allowed per inning - by a manager or coach - before a pitcher must be pulled. There is no limit, however, on players-only meetings.
