TAMPA - The unbeaten season of Carrollwood Day School crashed in the second half Friday as Canterbury pulled away for a victory.
The Patriots (8-1) will play next week in the second-place game of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference before finishing with a bowl game at Northside Christian on Nov. 19. Canterbury (8-1) moved into the conference title game.
Crusaders running back James Goodwin rushed 16 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 23, 75 and 2 yards. His final score broke a 21-21 tie. Canterbury had 429 rushing yards.
The Patriots fell behind 14-0, then 21-7, but rallied behind quarterback Billy Embody, who was 22 of 32 for 216 yards and two touchdowns, including a 7-yard strike to Dillon Floyd, which tied the game just before halftime. Embody also scored on a 1-yard keeper.
The Patriots went three-and-out on the second half's opening possession, then Canterbury mounted an eight-play, 57-yard scoring drive, capped by Goodwin's 2-yard run. Canterbury extended its lead with a nine-play, 80-yard TD drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Dominique Thornton.
