TAMPA - Alonso coach Mike Heldt didn't care about his team's record or the fact that the team faced adversity all season.
He was simply happy that the Ravens (4-5) reached the playoffs as runners-up behind Plant in Class 5A-District 5 after a rout of visiting Gaither on senior night.
"We have dealt with more adversity than any team in the county," Heldt said. "We've been through it and played everyone and we deserve to be in the playoffs."
Heldt was suspended for two weeks in October after an incident involving his defensive coordinator, who was fired for cursing during halftime of a loss to Hillsborough.
Alonso made easy work of Gaither (1-8) as C.J. Bennett threw for two TDs and ran for another. The Ravens started with a bootleg run by Bennett that went 11 yards for the TD.
Alonso added scores by Dylan Fisher on an easy 4-yard pass from Bennett, and Fisher again on a 5-yard run to make it 21-0.
Brandon Holloway scored on an 89-yard run midway through the third quarter and Julian Jones returned an interception 48 yards late in the third quarter.
