ST. PETERSBURG - Voters will go to the polls today to elect this city's next mayor.
Bill Foster and Kathleen Ford are battling to replace Mayor Rick Baker, who is finishing his second term.
Foster on Monday was taping an automated telephone message for voters, while Ford was touring a family resource center.
On the campaign trail during the last full day of campaigning, Foster emphasized public safety. He wants to see, among other things, a return to the city's old community policing system, where officers were assigned to a specific neighborhood. St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon abolished the program.
Ford stressed fiscal responsibility. She has said City Hall is top-heavy with staff who are paid too much, and she has vowed to eliminate more than a dozen well-paying positions.
The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. A list of polling locations is available at votepinellas.com.
