DADE CITY - During their regular meeting today, Pasco County commissioners will hold a rare closed-door session to discuss the county's ongoing contract negotiations with its unionized firefighters.
The closed session, which is allowed under the state's open meetings law, is set to start at 3:30 p.m. in Dade City. Commissioners will meet at the historic Pasco County Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Ave.
The closed session will include commissioners, County Administrator John Gallagher, County Attorney Jeff Steinsnyder, Emergency Services chief Anthony Lopinto and James Brown, the labor attorney the county recently hired to represent it in the talks with the firefighters.
Commissioners have held other closed sessions to discuss the firefighters' contract in the past.
County officials spent the summer trying to get the county's firefighters to agree to a contract that reduced their holiday benefits in 2010 in trade for preserving more than 20 positions. Firefighters rejected that contract just before the county's final vote on the 2009-10 budget, which took effect Oct. 1.
