TAMPA - The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association expects more than 1,000 aircraft in Tampa for the AOPA Aviation Summit Thursday through Saturday, spokesman Chris Dancy said.
"We traditionally plan for 2,000 aircraft," he said. "Realistically, and assuming good weather, we think 1,000 aircraft on the ground at any one time, probably split evenly between Peter O. Knight and Tampa Executive airports, would be the highest likely."
Tampa International Airport traffic should not be affected, with only about a half-dozen event-related aircraft landing there, he said.
Up to 10,000 association members are expected.
Aircraft, including the 1937 Lockheed Electra used in the movie "Amelia," will be on display beginning Thursday at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands.
On Saturday, the public can test flight simulators and take a $70 introductory flight on a general aviation aircraft at Peter O. Knight Airport.
The public is invited to attend the association's exhibit at Tampa Convention Center. Admission is $25; or $50 for exhibits and forums.
Pilot and musician John Oates will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the center. The concert is open to the public. For tickets, go to https://register.rcsreg.com/regos-1.0/aopa2009/jo/....
