GAINESVILLE - Heralded freshman guard Kenny Boynton scored 22 points in his college debut Monday night, helping the University of Florida to a 95-46 preseason victory against Saint Leo.
"I was nervous because I didn't know how I was going to feel when I got out there, but after I scored that first point I just played my game," Boynton said.
Boynton consistently got to the rim and provided the kind of athletic scoring threat that UF has lacked in recent years.
Erving Walker played well in his first game as the starting point guard for the Gators, scoring 16 points and dishing out nine assists.
Alex Tyus seems to be benefiting from the addition of Georgetown transfer Vernon Macklin to the UF frontcourt.
With Macklin (seven points, four rebounds) at center, Tyus was free to show his versatility at power forward, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
"It's easier going against guys my size," said Tyus, who played out of position at center all of last year. "The chemistry (between me and Macklin) is real good. We get along great."
