Lenders are owners
In your cover article on pending foreclosed properties Nov. 4, the manager of Hillsborough County Code Enforcement was quoted: "The lender doesn't own the property, so we can't legally make them maintain it." Excuse me?
As any homeowner knows, a majority of each monthly payment goes to the lender (bank) to pay interest, and a much smaller portion goes to pay down principal. The old joke is that every month, you might own another doorknob or floor tile.
Who's in possession of the deed or title until the last payment? The lender.
The term "homeowner" is a misnomer, because you're all renters until your mortgages are paid off. So make the lenders pay for all the upkeep on "in-foreclosure" homes they currently own.
While we're at it, make them pay it out of those exorbitant bonuses they paid themselves with bailout money!

'Knucklehead' retort
Just wanted to drop a quick retort on J. Kelly Lange's "Theater for Knuckleheads" ramble (Other views, Nov. 5).
If I ever want to know the state propaganda line, I'll take the St. Pete Times or watch CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS or listen to NPR, Bill Moyers or the blathering Dan Rather, wherever his latest microphone is.
Reading Lange's ramble about one straight-up and honest news organization is in lock-step with the "Hammers" on the left who just don't get it that the average "Knuckleheads" are the majority of the USA.
