Pinellas prep football preview

Largo (7-1) at Countryside (8-1)

Easily the game of the week in the county.

Countryside is on a roll and coming off a strong win at East Lake. Somewhat surprisingly, Countryside's defense has been making key stops against opponents and is playing sound.

Largo, since losing at home to Tarpon Springs, has returned to its normal strong self. Part of that is due to freshman quarterback Juwan Brown who gives the Packers a third running weapon who also possesses a strong arm.

This is the final regular season game for Countryside.

St. Petersburg (7-1) at Pinellas Park (4-4)

A playoff berth is on the line in this contest with the winner capturing the Class 5A-9 runner-up spot.

After being held to 13 points by Gibbs two weeks ago, St. Petersburg has been on fire - scoring 103 points in its last two games.

If Pinellas Park, which lost all of its games the past two seasons, can upset St. Petersburg, it would guarantee the Patriots no less than a .500 season.

East Lake at Dunedin

Another game with playoff hopes on the line. The winner clinches the Class 5A-8 runner-up spot.

Dunedin's upset last week over Clearwater kept the Falcons alive for a playoff berth. Duplicating that against East Lake's stingy defense will be a tall order.

East Lake is coming off a tough loss to Countryside so the Eagles will be more than a little motivated.

Clearwater (5-3) at Palm Harbor (3-5)

While both teams are out of playoff contention, pride hangs in the balance. If Clearwater wins it guarantees a winning season.

If Palm Harbor wins, the Hurricanes have a shot at a .500 season. The loser finishes in the basement of the Class 5A-8 district.

Clearwater quarterback Ryan Hagen will match up against his counterpart Billy Pavlock. Hagen already has 593 yards passing while Pavlock has nearly as many rushing yards (432) as passing (452).Seminole (1-8) at Gibbs (5-3)

The host Gladiators are on a roll. After stumbling in their first three games, Gibbs has won five straight, including a major upset over St. Petersburg to capture the school's first district title.

The reason for this streak has largely been the stellar play of quarterback Josh Rembert who has 1,295 yards passing and 15 touchdowns.

Lakewood (6-2) at Spoto (7-2)

The winner clinches a district runner-up bid in the Class 3A-8 district race. Should be an entertaining game.

Last week after a sluggish start, Spoto ran away from Osceola. It should be fun to watch Lakewood's Bernard Reedy try to one-up Spoto's Jamar Burns.

Fort Meade (8-0) at Clearwater Central Catholic (5-3)

The Marauders have a shot at a playoff berth but they would have to first upset state power Fort Meade.

Good luck.

CCC would have to play the perfect game, especially quarterback Eric Miller (447 yards passing, 482 yards rushing).

St. Petersburg Catholic (5-3) at Jesuit (7-1)

This will be tough for the Barons. First, it's a road game. Second, Jesuit is playing for a playoff berth.

SPC is out of the running for postseason play.

Admiral Farragut (5-2) at Shorecrest Prep (2-6)

Admiral Farragut has already clinched a playoff berth so this game is more for bragging rights for the cross-town St. Petersburg rivals. Only twice this season has Admiral Farragut scored less than 30 points.

Indian Rocks Christian (6-2) at Berkeley Prep (5-2)

The Golden Eagles have had a really good season, except for the fact they are out of playoff contention. Berkeley Prep, meanwhile, with a win locks up a playoff berth.

IRC quarterback Blake Farver needs nine yards passing to break 1,000 yards for the season.

Canterbury (7-1) at Carrollwood Day (8-0)

Canterbury is having a wonderful season and a win over Carrollwood Day may just be icing on the cake.
