SWIMMING: Mitchell boys make a mark

These six Mitchell swimmers almost pulled off the improbable Thursday at the Class 2A-Region 2 swimming championships at the University of Florida's O'Connell Center. The Mustangs boys team had the best region showing in school history by finishing second to Lecanto, 193.5 to 185.

"The kids turned the program around," said Mitchell coach Joe Lampkin, the fourth swimming coach at Mitchell in as many years. "They are a super group of boys. Very mature. All self-motivated. I can't say enough about them."

Mitchell scored 150 of its team points in just four events (200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke). McCaffrey advanced to Thursday's state meet at the Orlando YMCA in two events by winning the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Wegener, Ondrejka, McCaffrey and Hunt also will advance as members of the Mustangs' region championship 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Both of those relays were worth 40 team points, and McCaffrey earned 20 for his first-place finish in the butterfly, but the Mustangs finished first (McCaffrey), third (Ondrejka) and fifth (Wert) in the breaststroke to give them an additional 50 points.

Lampkin was surprised when he found out his team had placed second.

"I thought we had left too many points on the table," he said. "I thought we had too many events without swimmers."

That haunted Mitchell at the Sunshine Athletic Conference and the district meet. The Mustangs finished second at SAC and third at district.

"That's something we will have to work on for next year," Lampkin said.

The Florida High School Athletic Association won't release the at-large qualifiers for the state meet until Sunday. The only other Pasco County qualifiers right now are Gulf's Hunter Swartsel (100 freestyle) and Sunlake's Beth Tillman (diving). But historically, the top three individuals usually earn at-large selections.
