FORT WORTH, Texas - Jeff Gordon won his first pole of the season with a qualifying lap of 191.117 mph at the 1 1/2 -mile, high-banked track where he got his only victory of the season in April. It was his first win in Texas.
It is the 68th career pole for the four-time champion, who is third in the standings with three races remaining.
"We weren't waiting," said Gordon, smiling. "We were working hard every weekend. And you know we've been very close. ... But the fact that we did get it and to do it here at Texas, a track where we have struggled at until recently, this is a great place to do it. We're focused on ending this season the best we possibly can. "
Points leader Jimmie Johnson, who is going for his unprecedented fourth consecutive title, qualified 12th.
Mark Martin, who is second in the standings, 184 points behind, will start seventh.
