IOWA CITY, Iowa - Dan Persa threw a touchdown pass and Marshall Thomas recovered a fumble for another touchdown, and Northwestern snapped No. 8 Iowa's 13-game winning streak with a 17-10 victory Saturday.
It was the first win vs. a top-10 opponent for the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) since knocking off then-No. 6 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime in 2004.
Iowa lost quarterback Ricky Stanzi to an ankle injury early in the second quarter. Freshman James Vandenberg was just nine of 27 for 82 yards in relief, and couldn't lead the Hawkeyes (9-1, 5-1) to any points after Stanzi left the game.
Northwestern scored twice off turnovers in the second quarter. Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone after the hit that knocked Stanzi out of the game, and Drake Dunsmore caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Persa after another turnover.
Brandon Wegher had 63 yards rushing for Iowa, whose national title hopes are all but over. The Hawkeyes can still win at least a share of the Big Ten title with victories vs. Ohio State and Minnesota in their final two games.
NO. 24 WISCONSIN 31, INDIANA 28
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - John Clay ran for 134 yards and a touchdown, Montee Ball scored two TDs and Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2) held off a fourth-quarter rally by Indiana (4-6, 1-5). The Badgers ran for 294 yards and won their second straight. The Hoosiers have lost three in a row and six of seven.
PURDUE 38, MICHIGAN 36
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Joey Elliott threw for a career-high 367 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another to help Purdue rally past Michigan, dealing a serious blow to the Wolverines' bowl hopes.
The Boilermakers (4-6, 3-3) trailed 24-10 at halftime but Michigan (5-5, 1-5) came undone in the third quarter again, allowing 21 points for the second week in a row.
ILLINOIS 35, MINNESOTA 32
MINNEAPOLIS - Terry Hawthorne returned an interception for a touchdown and Clay Nurse had four of Illinois' seven sacks to lead the Illini (3-6, 2-5) to a victory vs. Minnesota (5-5, 3-4).
MICHIGAN STATE 49, WESTERN MICHIGAN 14
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Little-used Ashton Leggett ran for 110 yards and four touchdowns and Kirk Cousins threw for a career-high 353 yards and two scores to lead Michigan State (5-5) past Western Michigan (4-6) in a rare November nonconference matchup for the Spartans.
