HUDSON - She's not quite one in a million, but she's close.

Lauren Webb is the first Hudson High School student in 14 years to be named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. She placed in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2010 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a news release states.

"I'm pretty excited," said the 16-year-old senior. "This is a big deal."

This marks the latest in a long line of achievements for the Hudson resident, who maintains a 4.476 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society. She's a participant in Teen Court activities and is president of student government.

"I oversee meetings and participate in planning agendas and activities as a team effort," she said. "We all work together."

Last year, Webb tackled another civic activity. In a mock election, she headed the school campaign to elect President Barack Obama.

"I set up the campaign, did research, made posters and gave speeches," she said.

Webb also enjoys government and legal studies, as well as studies that involve constitutional interpretation.

"What I like about the law is that it's not one concrete thing," she said. "Our interpretation of the Constitution changes all the time, so we don't get stuck in the past."

The pursuit of women's equality also is important to Webb.

"I'm very opinionated about a number of issues, including women's rights," she said. "I'd love to see the ERA passed."

Webb also hones her political science skills as an employee at Eastern Research Services, where she administers telephone opinion surveys.

"I do a lot of surveys, some of them political," she said. "It's interesting to see what different people think about different issues."

Webb, the daughter of Paul Webb and Lisa Remick, hopes to study political science in college, then go to law school.

"I think it would be interesting to have a career as a lawyer, and I might also pursue a career as a judge," she said. "And I'm not sure, but I might want to run for office. Or at least work on the sidelines."
