LAKELAND - One person died and another was injured this afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 92 in Lakeland.
Traffic investigators say 28-year-old Jose Vargas of Lakeland was driving his Honda Civic westbound on U.S. 92 near the entrance to Saddle Creek Park when he tried to pull out from behind a semi-truck at about 12:30 p.m. Vargas apparently over-corrected and lost control of the Civic, which flipped, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Vargas, who was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, died at the scene. His sole passenger, Louis Enrique Vega-Rosario, 34, of Lakeland was listed in stable condition this afternoon at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
The wreck reduced eastbound traffic on U.S. 92 to one lane for several hours. All lanes are now open.
