Some questions

I would like someone to explain to me why we are still in Iraq. President Bush told us it was to remove a human rights-violating dictator and to destroy his weapons of mass destruction. The dictator is dead. No WMDs were found. But we are still there. Obama promised change but has not delivered.

We were told by Bush that Afghanistan had the training bases for the 9/11 attackers and the location of bin Laden. The bases are closed, and bin Laden moved on. Why are we spending billions of our dollars in these places?

These folks need to finance and police their own problems. We need to spend our dollars on our problems, and they are many: education, infrastructure, employment, health care and illegal immigrants. Need I go on?

More knuckleheads

J. Kelly Lange's column, "Theater for knuckleheads," (Other Views, Nov. 5), does not meet the threshold of what should be published in the Tribune. He wrote it in response to Charles Krauthammer's column, "More than a Fox hunt," which detailed the unprecedented and unprofessional actions of the president and his staff to disparage the Fox News network and limit its ability to report the news.

Unsupported by facts and data, and certainly not rational, Lange's attack piece is full of condescension, painful analogies and even disrespect toward Krauthammer's mother. It also clearly demonstrates the double standard most liberals, and the entire Obama administration, think they are entitled to. Imagine just for a moment the cry from liberals if the Bush administration had publicly belittled MSNBC or tried to limit its ability to report.

The sycophantic press earns legitimacy by agreeing with the Obama administration; Fox earns legitimacy by reporting on it.

From reading his piece, all we can learn is that the author is liberal. As Lange clearly illustrates, there is no prerequisite to know what you're talking about when exercising the right of free speech. I respectfully submit that the proper place for his column was a left-wing blog or bathroom wall, not the editorial page of The Tampa Tribune.

Stop name calling

Where in the world did this J. Kelly Lange from Lutz really come from? Quoting the White House mouth piece, "Fox is not really a news station." But during the Fort Hood shootings, MSNBC reported: "And this just in from Fox News."

J., whatever your real name is, cease the name calling. "Lackeys." "Puppeteers." "Bully." "Knuckleheads." It tends to show one's ignorance.

Reduce union size

Hat's off to the Trib for getting it right in terms of the police and firemen wanting more money and benefits. Unfortunately, they've fallen into the same entitlement mentality that has hastened our economic downfall.

My recommendation is to reduce both agencies' work force by a minimum of 10 percent. If and when more tax money arrives in the city coffers, then and only then should they begin to rehire from the growing number of skilled but unemployed workers who are readily available.

Thanks inmates

I appreciated the article about the inmates helping the guard at the Hillsborough County jail (front page, Nov. 5). I would like to commend those inmates who helped. I hope that when they are released, they will turn their lives around for good, no matter how tough it might be. I will pray for them. I hope the best for the guard also. He has put in many years of service in a stressful job.
