Burglars pried open the garden shop doors of a Kmart in Ellenton early this morning, went directly to the jewelry counter and made off with $26,000 worth of property, Manatee County deputies said.
The break-in occurred just after 4 a.m. at the Kmart at 6126 U.S. 301, deputies said.
Deputies said they responded to an alarm at the store and found the doors of the garden center forced open. A review of the surveillance tape revealed that the thieves went to the jewelry counter, smashed it and stole the loot.
Deputies set up a perimeter and brought in a tracking dog, but the trail was lost.
